Guide
How to play Span
A board of hexagons, each hiding a trivia clue. Answer them to build a gold path from the left edge to the right. Your time is your score.
How to play
- Start on the left edge. Tap a ringed hex to open its clue, then type the answer.
- Use the letters. The letters on a hex are the first letter of each word in the answer, so JP could be Jurassic Park.
- Right answers turn gold and join up with the gold hexes beside them.
- A wrong answer shuts that hex for good. So does passing. Stuck on a clue? Tap Pass and try a different way across.
- Span the board: link gold hexes from the left edge all the way to the right.
The board
The board is five columns of five hexes. Each column is harder than the one before: the left column has clues almost everyone knows, and the right column is a stretch, but fair. Every hex touches the hexes next to it in the column after, so there’s more than one way across.
Scoring
The clock starts on your first tap and counts up. Reach the right edge and your time is your score: the faster, the better. If wrong answers and passes cut off every way across, the run ends there.
Your shared result shows the board as squares: yellow for gold, red for shut, black for hexes you never tried. It shows your path without giving away any answers.
Tips
- Keep your options open. A path through the middle rows can still turn up or down. A path along the top or bottom edge has fewer ways forward.
- Pass early, not late. A pass costs the same as a wrong answer, but it’s quicker. If a clue means nothing to you, move on.
- Read the letters first. Knowing it’s two words starting with J and P narrows things down fast.
The clues
Clues cover geography, history, science, movies, music, sport, food and more. Every clue’s facts are checked against a source, and common other ways of writing an answer are accepted too.
Questions
- When does a new board come out? Every day at midnight, your local time.
- Is it the same for everyone? Yes. One board a day, the same for everyone.
- Do I need the exact answer? Close is not enough, but common versions of an answer count. For example, both Amazon and Amazon River are accepted.
- Is it free? Yes. No accounts and no sign-ups. Your progress and streak are saved in your browser on this device.
